Breton servant girl who, in 1839 in the seaside town of Saint-Servan, took into her own bed an elderly blind widow who had no one to care for her — and from that single act of charity grew the worldwide Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor. Displaced from leadership of her own community by an ambitious chaplain, she lived her final twenty-seven years in obscurity among the novices, who did not know she was the foundress until after her death. The Little Sisters today serve thousands of elderly poor in homes around the world.
