Hebrew patriarch, son of Isaac and Rebekah, twin of Esau, father of the twelve patriarchs of Israel (Genesis 25-50); renamed "Israel" after wrestling with the angel at Peniel. Roman Martyrology commemorates the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
