Pope from 590-604, Roman patrician and former Prefect of the City who became a Benedictine before being elected pope; reformed the Roman liturgy (the Gregorian Sacramentary, Gregorian chant), sent St. Augustine of Canterbury to evangelize England (596), and authored the "Pastoral Rule," "Dialogues," and "Moralia in Job." Doctor of the Church; one of the four Latin Fathers.
