Italian Franciscan bishop and martyr (1833-1900), missionary to China for forty years and Vicar Apostolic of Northern Shanxi from 1891; with twenty-five companions (Franciscan friars and Sisters, seminarians, and lay Chinese Christians) executed at Taiyuan during the Boxer Rebellion. Among the 120 Martyrs of China canonized 2000 by John Paul II.
