Italian Benedictine bishop and martyr (c. 980-1046), Venetian who set out for the Holy Land but was retained in Hungary by St. Stephen I; first bishop of Csanád (1030) and tutor to St. Emeric. After Stephen's death and the pagan reaction was killed at Pest by being thrown from the cliff that bears his name ("Gellért-hegy"). Canonized 1083 by Gregory VII.
