Italian-American foundress (1850-1917), born near Lodi; founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1880 and at Leo XIII's direction sailed for the United States in 1889 to serve Italian immigrants. Established 67 institutions—schools, hospitals, orphanages—across the U.S., Latin America, and Europe. Naturalized 1909; first U.S. citizen canonized (1946 by Pius XII).
