King of Northumbria (c. 586-633); unified Deira and Bernicia at York and was the first Christian king of the north, baptized with his nobles by St. Paulinus in 627. Killed by the pagan Penda of Mercia at the Battle of Hatfield Chase and venerated as martyr.
