Hebrew prophet of the 6th century BC, exiled to Babylon as a youth and rising to high office under Nebuchadnezzar and his successors; the Book of Daniel preserves his apocalyptic visions and the famous narratives of the lions' den and his three companions in the fiery furnace. Feast July 21.
