Italian abbess (1194-1253), spiritual daughter of St. Francis and foundress of the Order of Poor Ladies (Poor Clares) at San Damiano; the first woman in the Church to write a monastic Rule. Patroness of television, having watched a Christmas Mass projected on the wall of her cell when too ill to attend. Feast August 11.
