Anglo-Saxon Benedictine monk of Jarrow (672-735), historian, exegete, and Doctor of the Church; his Ecclesiastical History of the English People is the founding work of English historiography. Last words were a doxology completed as he finished dictating his translation of John's Gospel. Feast May 25.
