Greek bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia (c. 330-379), one of the four great Eastern Doctors of the Church and a chief defender of the Nicene faith against Arianism; his Rule shaped Eastern monasticism, and his liturgy still bears his name. Brother of St. Gregory of Nyssa and friend of St. Gregory Nazianzen. Feast January 2.
