Italian physician turned priest, founder of the Clerics Regular of St. Paul (the Barnabites) and co-founder of the Angelic Sisters of St. Paul. With St. Cajetan and others he led the Catholic Reformation in northern Italy, restoring fervor in the laity through frequent reception of the sacraments and devotion to the Crucified Christ. He revived the practice of ringing church bells at three on Friday afternoons in memory of the Passion.
