One of the Twelve Apostles, brother of Simon Peter and originally a disciple of John the Baptist; the first apostle called by Jesus. Tradition has him preaching in Greece and Asia Minor and martyred on an X-shaped cross at Patras. Patron of Scotland, Russia, and Greece. Feast November 30.
