Pope from 1963 to 1978, who guided the Second Vatican Council to its conclusion and oversaw the implementation of its reforms. His prophetic encyclical Humanae Vitae (1968) reaffirmed the Church's teaching against artificial contraception, a stance defended at significant personal cost. The first pope of the modern era to travel beyond Italy, he visited the Holy Land, India, the United Nations, and many other regions, embodying a Church newly engaged with the world.
