Pope from 1958 to 1963, beloved for his warmth, simplicity, and pastoral heart. After a long career as a papal diplomat, where his work in Bulgaria and Turkey saved thousands of Jews during the Second World War, he was elected pope at age seventy-six and astonished the world by convoking the Second Vatican Council in 1962. His encyclical Pacem in Terris remains a foundational document of modern Catholic social teaching.
