Anglo-Saxon Benedictine abbess, of Wessex, niece of St. Boniface and sister of Sts. Willibald and Winibald; came to Germany in 748 to assist her uncle's mission, succeeded as abbess of the double monastery of Heidenheim.
Patron of harvest; the "Walpurgisnacht" of central European folklore takes its name from the eve of her relics' translation, May 1.
