Catholic Prayers

Eternal Rest (Requiem Aeternam)

Eternal Rest (Requiem Aeternam)

This brief prayer for the dead is one of the most frequently used in Catholic devotion. It is prayed at funerals, in the Divine Office, after Grace After Meals, and whenever remembering the faithful departed.

English

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace.
Amen.

May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

Latin (Requiem Aeternam)

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Requiescant in pace.
Amen.

Fidelium animae, per misericordiam Dei,
requiescant in pace.
Amen.

Origin: Based on 4 Esdras 2:34-35 ("Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis"), this prayer has been used in the Church's liturgy for the dead since ancient times.
