Pope from 741-752, of Greek family from Calabria; last Greek pope before the medieval Latin papacy. Negotiated peace between the Lombards and the Byzantine Empire, advised Pippin on the deposition of the last Merovingian (a foundational moment for the Carolingian dynasty), translated St. Gregory's "Dialogues" into Greek. Pre-Congregation.
