Frankish duke and Benedictine monk (c. 755-812), cousin of Charlemagne, Duke of Aquitaine and victorious Carolingian general against the Saracens; founded the abbey of Gellone (later Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert) in 804 and entered it as monk under his friend St. Benedict of Aniane. Pre-Congregation.
