Greek-born Archbishop of Canterbury (602-690), Greek monk of Tarsus consecrated at age 66 by Pope Vitalian and sent to England in 668; the first Archbishop of Canterbury whose authority was accepted by the entire English Church. Convoked the Council of Hertford (672), the first national synod of the English Church; founded the school at Canterbury that produced such pupils as St. Aldhelm. Pre-Congregation.
