African bishop and theologian (c. 462-527), Berber-Roman aristocrat of Telepte who left an imperial procuratorship to enter monastic life; bishop of Ruspe c. 507, twice exiled to Sardinia by Vandal Arian kings. Foremost Latin theologian of his generation, ardent defender of Augustinian grace.
