First Franciscan martyrs: Berard, Peter, Otho, Accursius, and Adjutus, sent by St. Francis of Assisi himself in 1219 to preach the Gospel to the Muslims of Morocco; beheaded at Marrakesh in 1220 after openly preaching against Islam. Feast January 16.
