St. Paula of Rome was a Roman matron, of senatorial family, widowed at 32 with five children; under the spiritual direction of St. Jerome (whom she met in Pope Damasus's circle) sailed in 385 with her daughter St. Eustochium for Bethlehem, where she founded a double monastery near the Nativity.
