St. John of the Cross was a Spanish Discalced Carmelite mystic and poet, partner of St. Teresa of Avila in the Carmelite reform; imprisoned for nine months at Toledo by his Calced confreres, where he composed much of the "Spiritual Canticle." Author of "Ascent of Mount Carmel," "Dark Night of the Soul," and "Living Flame of Love." Doctor of the Church (1926).
