The Ave Regina Caelorum is one of the four seasonal Marian antiphons, sung from the Feast of the Presentation (February 2) until the Easter Vigil. It hails Mary as Queen of Heaven.
English
Hail, O Queen of Heaven.
Hail, O Lady of the Angels.
Hail, thou Root, hail, thou Gate,
from whom the Light of the world was born.
Rejoice, O glorious Virgin,
beautiful above all others.
Farewell, O most gracious one,
and pray for us to Christ.
Latin
Ave, Regina caelorum,
ave, Domina angelorum,
salve, radix, salve, porta,
ex qua mundo lux est orta.
Gaude, Virgo gloriosa,
super omnes speciosa;
vale, o valde decora,
et pro nobis Christum exora.
Origin: Dating to the 12th century or earlier, this antiphon is used at Compline during the pre-Lenten and Lenten seasons.
