St. Nuno Álvares Pereira
St. Nuno Álvares Pereira was a Portuguese soldier and Carmelite, "the Holy Constable," military commander whose victory at Aljubarrota (1385) secured Portuguese independence from Castile.
Widowed in 1422, gave his enormous wealth to the poor and entered the Discalced Carmelites at Lisbon as a lay brother. Canonized 2009 by Benedict XVI.
