The result is a cross that is as much air as metal, light to wear all day and open enough that the corpus reads clearly against it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePilgrim crucifixes in this lattice pattern were sold in quantity at Lourdes through the nineteenth century, carried home by people who had gone to the grotto to ask for something and wanted a token of the asking.
