At the middle a raised oval boss holds the veiled head of the Virgin in profile, her eyes lowered, modelled softly enough that the face reads as much by shadow as by line.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Madonna in profile, treated almost as a cameo, was a favourite of nineteenth-century devotional jewellers, and the filigree worked around her here has real fluency to it. A center this size was made for a substantial rosary strung with large beads, and it sits like a small brooch at the place where the decades meet. Nothing on the piece is lettered.
