Local tradition holds that two angels carried the cross down into the castle chapel to a priest who had nothing to say Mass with, which is why the angels are almost never left out of the design. The Caravaca cross became one of the great protective devotions of Spain and the Spanish Americas, kept at doorways and over beds against harm.
