At the foot of the shaft, cast in low relief, is a skull with crossed bones.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThat skull is not decoration. It is Adam's skull, which by old tradition lay buried at Golgotha, the place of the skull, so that the blood of the crucifixion fell on the grave of the first man and the second Adam redeemed the first. Colonial Spanish American workshops used the motif constantly, together with the rayed head.
